Side shift backhoe loaders â a backhoe loader whose rear excavating arm can be shifted laterally on its mounting, allowing the machine to dig close to a wall, kerb or obstruction without repositioning.
The side shift feature earns its cost in urban and utility work, where trenches run along kerbs and against buildings and a centre-mount backhoe has to be angled awkwardly or cannot reach at all. On open sites it adds little. Loader bucket at the front and backhoe at the rear make this the general purpose machine for small contractors.
