A blast blanket does not remove a threat. What it does is buy distance and reduce the fragmentation that causes most casualties in an explosion, which is a worthwhile role in a crowded or confined setting where a device cannot be moved and a cordon cannot be extended far enough. Weight and the number of operators required to deploy one are practical constraints worth checking against the way teams actually work, since a blanket that needs four people is not a two-person tool.
