A steam extruder using injected steam to preheat and condition the material before and during extrusion.
Steam preconditioning raises moisture and temperature before the material reaches the screw, which improves cooking, reduces the mechanical energy the extruder has to supply and lowers wear on the screw and barrel. It is standard on larger feed and pet food lines for exactly those reasons.
